Stretching and Mobility Exercises
Stretching, in its most basic form, is a natural and automatic action. People as well as horses often stretch instinctively after waking from sleep or after long periods of inactivity. It can help improve flexibility and range of motion and therefore enable the muscles to work most effectively. An increase in flexibility is accompanied by improved balance and coordination.
Stretching also increases blood flow to the muscle. This increase in circulation brings with it a greater nutrient supply to muscles which reduces muscle soreness and decreases the risk of injuries like muscle strains or other soft tissue injuries.
Stretching and mobility exercises can be particularly useful for horses on box rest. It is important to get vet clearance before I perform any work on injured horses.
